Just Grace and the Snack Attack
When Owen 1 makes fun of Sunni’s lunch, the principal makes Grace’s class do a unit on foods of the world to see what other people eat. Grace decides to do her project on potato chip flavors from around the world. Along the way, she gets jealous of her best friend, learns how to make a zine, and does something in school she never thought she would do. This is another pitch perfect book about the everyday life of a well meaning, funny and empathetic third grader named Grace.
Just Grace and the Snack Attack, by Charise Mericle Harper is the fifth book in the “Just Grace” series. It is aimed at 9-12 year olds, but I would think even 7-8 year old girls who can read would appreciate the humor and items in it.
I love the creativity of Charise Harper. As a girly girl I remember the drawing and making of ‘zines back in the day (yes, I was that innovative back than LOL). I watch my almost 7 year old just catching onto this phase which is why I say that it’s age appropriate, though she can’t quite read it all alone.
I thought it was extremely interesting to know that the graphics are all hand or “ink” drawn than digitally filled after. They are really cute.
As I was reading this book, I felt like Grace was right beside me talking my ear off. It reminded me of my daughter (who is almost 7), sitting beside me and talking. So it’s very fluent in girl talk lol. Her scattered thoughts might be a little harder to follow for us older people, but that being said I found it quite humorous.
This reminds me of some of the books I read as a child, and think that in general it’s a fun book with projects and crafty ideas that kids (mostly girls) will enjoy.
The idea that struck me in the book was when Grace was talking about the food project and saying that the teacher DIDN’T think it was a good idea to go to a restaurant and try different foods. For someone debating homeschooling like myself, I thought that was an EXCELLENT idea for trying different foods in a homeschooling setting!
For those of you interested in the zine, I just happened to do a google on it and found it at : http://www.scribd.com/doc/21533555/Just-Grace-Shows-You-How-to-Make-a-Zine
how cool is that?
