finding peace during trouble times

Are you looking for peace?

Sometimes taking time by yourself and listening to God’s Word; meditating on His Word can help us focus on our life, but it can also help us find that inner peace we need.  William Moss helps to create that type of atmosphere with his new prayer/journal book called “Finding Inner Peace During Troubled Times”.  It is a short essay he wrote, along with a lot of scripture for us to reflect upon.

Now we don’t need to get worried that this is New Age or something — meditation on God’s Word is appropriate Christian behavior and only helps us on our journey through life.

Moss provides a small but power voice of God’s wisdom in this little book (only 26 pages long) that can help us along our search for clarity and peace through Jesus Christ.  We can take His Words, read them and spend a few moments jotting down our thoughts or prayers about it.

I think it would make a nice gift book for friends or family you know who are searching for Christ, or enjoy journalling.  I personally felt better and perhaps a tad more peaceful after reading it!

News Flash: Parenting isn’t for the faint of heart

This morning I could have picked up any book off of my “to read” pile, but I chose this one.  It was exactly the kind of encouragement I needed on Monday and the rest of this week.

theparentadventureThe book is called The Parent Adventure: Preparing Your Kid for a Life with God,  by Scott McConnell, Rodney and Selma Wilson.

What’s the  book about?

Informed by research that reveals destructive parenting patterns are being handed down through most American families (including Christian house- holds), The Parent Adventure looks to the church to help break this cycle and teach moms and dads how to prepare their kids for a lifetime with God.

The problem starts when parents raise children based on their personal experiences growing up instead of using the Bible as the timeless, authoritative guide. Although seemingly painful at first, the parental attitude of “letting go” must begin intentionally at birth, keeping in mind that each child’s life is more about knowing God than anything else. With this outlook established, the future-focused mom and dad will move more joyfully through each stage in the adventure of parenting as detailed in the book.

Knowing God has a lifelong plan for each family member, parents and kids will grow closer to each other just as sure as they will grow closer to God.

I like that it states right off the bat that the purpose of this book is to point parents to God’s Word for advice.  That means a lot to me as a Christian parent trying to figure out how to be a better parent to my children.

I like that this book provides statics across America and have researched their answers before giving me the information.  I found it very interesting to know some of the stats they brought out such as how many people think they know what God says about parenting, and where they get parenting advice from.

I love that they blatantly point out that things don’t matter and if we fail to equip our children with a faith in Jesus Christ we have failed our  jobs.  I don’t think I’ve read a parenting book that hits it so dead on as this!

I also  love how both Rodney and Selma write together about this book.  It is refreshing to read from both parents point of view and how they differ on tackling subjects.

Each chapter ends with a prayer and some questions to encourge you or to discuss with your children about.  For example, chapter four is about communicaton and some of the end questions are:

  • What can you share with your child about God’s work in your life through prayer?
  • What verse can you teach your child this week that will teach them about the importance to talking to God? (They had answers in the book if you needed them such as Proverbs 1:8-9, or Phillipians 4:6)

Honestly I am just soaking this book up.  As a parent of four children, I have been blessed by what I’ve read.  I’ve been encouraged by some of the things that we’re doing right, and I am encouraged by the advice and information this book has provided me with.  Most of all I am encouraged that it follow’s and encourages God’s Word so much.

One of my favorite quotes from this book is:

parentadventure-quote1

I love it because I KNOW I hate when my kids feel pain.  It tears me up when Miss H or Master P feel pain and disappointment.  It is encouraging to know that we can use that pain and turn it God and help them learn from it.  It is our responsiblity as parents do this.

And this is only one of many that jumped out at me.  In the following section it goes on to talk about the deception we tell ourselves as parents and what God really says about it.

For example, the decption that we can’t change as parents because of our mistakes in the past.  Well, God’s Word says in 1 John 1:9 that if we confess our sins, He is faithful and just to forgive our sins and cleanse us from all unrighteousness.

Yes, I know that verse, but I am encouraged to apply it to my parenting life as I’ve yelled at the kids for the millionth time and that I’ve cried and felt worthless as a parent  most some days.

I’ve barely scratched the surface of this book, but I hope you’ll be encouraged by it.   I didn’t even cover the next chapter on celebrating with your family, or the church challenge; not to mention the parenting plan and ideas of how to have plans set in place of what we want to accomplish as parents.  Another concept this book brought forward and gave me a brilliant idea of my own was the “Pray it forward” idea.  Putting feet to our prayers.  ie.  Praying for the school staff and than bringing them a treat.  yes, I think I can do that!  I’m excited!

Of all the books I’ve read I will say this  book is a must read parenting book for EVERY PARENT who wishes to encourage and help their children grow spiritually.  They even have in small group material which I think is a fantastic idea!

What’s in your bookbag this week?  Have you heard of Pray it forward before?  If you have, what are some of the things you’ve done with your prayers?

After All these Years

I’m feeling much better today after my surgery, thanks for all the sweet comments and prayers! Much appreciated.  I’m only missing my coffee now, which will be back on the menu tomorrow!

So while I was all laid out this weekend, something I’m learning about Christian fiction lately is that you can’t put it into a box.  There aren’t two series a like, and like mainstream writers, every book varies on author and subject.  With Christian fiction I’m always taken into new levels of what really makes it Christian.  There are a few levels I’ve figured out so far:

  1. Written for mainstream with the hopes they are affected by it
  2. Written for christian audience with hopes they are affected by it
  3. A mix of both.
  4. Some good clean fun.  Not overtly Christian, but clean enough you might question whose writing it.

afterallSo why do I bring this up.  My latest read “After All These Years” by Sally John is written for Christian’s with the hopes they are affected by it (in my opinion).  It contains a lot of already Christian characters and language.   I think a non-Christian reader would have a hard time identifying with this book, but  I really like that about this book because it’s hard sometimes to relate to fiction books when it’s aimed at only non-Christians, kwim?  I like to think these people could be anybody in my circle of friends.   I love that Sally places her characters in “anybody’s town” .. they could be your neighbors.  This book is meant for women like me!

In the past I haven’t been a big fan of contemporary romance, but it’s growing on me.  Sally definitely makes me want to read more, and I’ll be looking up her books in the future for sure!  I read it in less than 24 hours as well.. couldn’t put it down!

What is “After All These Years” about?

There are two leading ladies in this book.

Isabel who was doing just fine until her ex boyfriend shows up and tries to uproot her “Christian” values while doing a local interview.  Has she really forgiven him for the past?  And can she tell him the secret she’s kept all these years?

Lia on the other hand is in Valley Oaks to start  new with her niece and escape some of the pains of her old life, but  she finds that she can’t run from somethings — love included.

—————————-

I will mention this book is very somber… or at least it was to me.  There were a few funny parts, but definitely a heavy read with a lot of information to process.  I’m not always in the mood for these books, but it definitely had a heartfelt and yearning notion in this book that drew me right in!  If you’re looking for something you can curl up and cry with, this is a great book!

After All These Years” is a good learning tool.  I love that I can pick up this book and learn a few things about my own Christianity and how issues are handled.  The message of forgiveness is a hard one for us to grasp sometimes and yet Sally makes it very clear through out her book that we need to be doing this.  She pulls out the characters past heartaches and how they’ve handled forgiveness and how it challenges their faith.  I found myself feeling the anguish the characters faced as my own past issues surface over forgiveness and appreciated how she showed a realistic portrayal of how her characters handled it.  I like that the characters relied a lot on prayer and that they worked through the issues.  It gives me encouragement and peace that i”m not alone!

experiencing the master makeover artist!

When I started doing book reviews I wanted to do them for a personal reason.  As a mother of four little children I tend to go crazy sometimes.  I mean I can’t hold a thought together without someone whining at me and I had to devise a plan to feel like myself again and it began with a book.  I wanted to enjoy my reading again.  But it was also two-fold.  I wanted to encourage my relationship with Christ and my desire to learn about Him.

So why am I telling you this.  Well, it’s now been about a year since I’ve been doing this fully and I can see how my reading style has changed and the books I never thought I could read again because of my lack of focus are books I am enjoying.  And this book I mentioned earlier this week has been one of those books that I’m excited to have read.

I love the learning and this book really brought out some new/old things that I know, but never focused enough on to fully understand them.   I’m thrilled that an old dog like me can be taught new tricks!

Each chapter in Experience the Ultimate Makeover- Discovering God’s Transforming Power by Sharon Jaynes touches, informs, and brings to light issues that we want to ignore.

appleIsn’t starting at the beginning a great place to understand why we need a makeover?  I’ve heard before but never really understood about the parts that we’re made up of.  Sharon explains this so well I finally got it!  We’re made up of three parts – body, soul & spirit.   Sharon uses the example of an apple and what it would be like to bite into a beautiful apple, only to taste rotten mush inside.  While I’ve understood the inside and out, I’ve never really placed it together with being my tent – my body, my soul – the fruit, and the seeds being the spirit.  The seed inside determines the fruit… oh how that makes so much more sense to me now!

Which brings me to a quote that captured my attention:

“The basis for Eve’s temptation, and for ours as well, is the lie that God is somehow holding out on us.”

Ouch!  Do I think that?  I know I can say all I want that I believe God’s word as truth, but until I apply it to my soul it is meaningless.  Do I think he’s holding out on me?  I may say no, but my actions say something else.

The Ultimate Make over is a beautiful journey into what we need to be and how we can get there. It’s reaffirming and refreshing like a pedicure.. it helps remove the old crusties  from being in the cold all winter and refreshes us to let us feel whole again.

I love that Sharon uses so much of God’s Word and pushes it on us… helping us to heal and rely on it. I love that she uses the metaphorical spa… it really hits home with me (being the girly girl that I am.)

For me, chapter Seven was a hard one: Renewing Mind – Changing the Way We Think.  She says it well when she says that “Every spiritual battle is won or lost at the threshold of the mind…”

Sharon does a really good analogy of how satan attacks us and how we need to recognize his lies, reject them (not letting them in in the first place), and how to replace those lies with the real truth.  These are things I know, but I sure don’t do well.  I am encouraged after reading this to work harder at this area in my life and to be successful at it.

Some of the examples of the lies are:

  • satan says God couldn’t love me.
  • God Says: “How great is the love the father lavishes on us, that we should be called children of God!” 1 John 3:1
  • satan says I’m damaged goods.
  • God says “Do you not know that your body is the temple of the Holy Spirit who is in you, whom you have received from God?  You are not your own; you were bought at a price.”  1 Cor. 6:19-20
  • satan says I’ll never get through this.
  • God says “Everyone born of God overcomes the world. This is the victor that has overcome the world, even our faith”  1 John 5:4-5

Oh friends,  I can’t tell you how much these verse help reaffirm what God really has done for us!

I’ve barely skimmed the surface of this book but I hope it gives you an idea of how much this book will encourage you. If you really are looking for a refreshing look at your spiritual walk and want the Ultimate Makeover I think you’ll glean a lot from this book.  This would be an excellent group study book!

I will add my most favorite thing about this book:  Other than the fact that this is a fantastic scripture based book, the very end is best!  Why?  Sharon gives her make-up kit!  It is the coolest thing I’ve seen and I may at some point do a WFW on it because it’s extremely inspirational!  I don’t want to give the spoiler to it, but think of it like the armor of God, but girly girl style!

Experience the Ultimate Makeover

ultimate-makeover

What’s wrong with me?”

“Why can’t I have the peace I see in other Christians?”

I opened this book and these questions popped out off the page at me.    I know I’ve been looking for a few more light reads lately, but this book seemed to side swipe me when I opened it.

Experience the Ultimate Makeover- Discovering God’s Transforming Power

by Sharon Jaynes

Sharon’s beginning story is  like my own.  I understand her desire to want to be beautiful and the feelings of inferiority growing up.  Most woman (if not all) want to be beautiful on some level, but we don’t necessarily know what that means.  How do we become beautiful on the inside when so many issues  eating us up on the inside?  Sharon points out in the very first chapter that even though we become Christians and our spiritual make over is complete, it doesn’t mean that soul is there.  “Inner beauty is the result of God’s transforming power in the heart of a willing soul.  He doesn’t simply cover up our flaws; He miraculously starts from scratch and makes us new.”

I love this because I’ve been struggling with this even now.  I think sometimes we as Christians think we should have it together and we fight God… we aren’t willing to let the change happen.  I’ve been praying this week “Lord change me.” instead of “Lord help me.”   Because the truth is if I ask for his help, it’s like I have a part in it, and I don’t.  I want to be his vessel for His work instead of my work. (and that’s hard to admit when I think I should know better!!)

I hope you’ll join me this week as I go through this book and see the truths in the lies we tell ourselves!

There is so much in this book, I’m excited to share with you.  I hope it will encourage you and hope – that there is opportunity for us to change and be the beautiful women God desires us to be!

Broken into Beautiful

broken

I hope you enjoyed the song/video yesterday.  The words of it can touch so deeply if you’ve been broken before.  It really describes the transformation of God’s love on our lives.

Broken into Beautiful by Gwen Smith.

If you haven’t read it, you will find Gwen straight forward and encouraging.  Her writing is easy to read– as if she’s sitting beside you having coffee and chatting with you.  In the first chapter “Behind the smile” had me crying by the end of it.  I could understand the slide from being a “good Christian girl” to how did I end up here in this big mess of worthlessness.

What’s it about?

If you’re like most women, you have things in your past you’d like to forget.  The result?  Guilt.  Pain.  Shame.  You feel unworthy to move on, to serve God, to be free, and to know peace.  While the enemy loves to shackle you with accusations, the Lord loves to extend grace and forgiveness.

In Broken into Beautiful, sing and songwriter Gwen Smith invites you to hear the stories of women with shattered dreams, shameful secrets, and damaged souls… and of the loving heavenly Father who makes them beautiful again.

He can restore your brokenness too.  Experience the unconditional love of Jesus and how it can change your life, and then stand back and watch the wonder of grace at work.  He is willing to eternally forgive and forget and to transform your life into something beautiful.

One of the quotes that got me was from the second chapter – “From Worthless to Precious”.

“I’m constantly tempted to define my worth with activities and accomplishments.  I’ve come to realize, however, that way of thinking is a spiritual dead end.”

Does that first part ring a bell with anyone?  Growing up, that was drilled into my head.  Perhaps not intentionally, but all the same I knew that what I did (or didn’t do) was important and if I didn’t compete for the “highly valued things” I was not worth much.  Those activities I hated, and never being “as good as” so and so.. as I thought of university I never felt like the choice I wanted was as good as what “I should do”.  I look back and think, man if I could do it again, I wouldn’t have listened to that voice in my head… I would have done what I loved from the start.  I wouldn’t have believe that lie.

Now the second part of that quote… a spiritual dead end

I have felt for years that I’ve been trapped in a vicious cycle.. playing those scenarios over and over in my head.. but it gets me no where fast…  It takes away from our relationship to God, and we need to understand that it really is a spiritual dead end.

Gwen really helps you understand that no matter what sin — God can change you.

I really felt that she had some interesting insights that I had never thought of before.  For example, in chapter three – “Guilty to Forgiven” she talks about Adam and Eve, and how in their best efforts to cover up their shame it was “ineffective before God” (using fig leaves), and how God had to provide the covering for them.  I have never thought of my sin in the same way… how Eve’s little sin of the apple.. just a bite was similar to my failures.. one bite at a time… and how no matter how I try and hide them, it’s pointless — unless I go to the cross I can’t clean up the mess on my own.

I’m fine With God… part 3 cuz I couldn’t wait til Monday..

Okay, I got the impression from the first 2 posts, people weren’t too impressed with this book’s title.  In fact, I’m a little scared of this book title!  I can hear the pin drop.  I have to admit my last post, I was writing with a few assumptions that I probably shouldn’t have, so I’m hoping this will help and give me a little mercy on my reviewing skills. So let me provide you with more information.

I think people will find this to be an extreme book.  It will test you, challenge you, and maybe even make you mad, depending on where you are, or how you feel about the topics covered in this book.  It does cover some hot topics that really will make you go what???!! I know I was wrinkling my brow on a few of them trying to figure out what was meant on the subjects (which I did get answers when I continued reading!) On the other side, it’s quite humorous and helps us see that we are human and that while we think we’re all that and than some we’ve still got a lot to learn!

Here are a few more things I’ve pulled out of it…  perhaps it will help clarify it a bit.

imfinewithgodSo first things first, this does not mean  the authors don’t like ALL Christians.   They are Christians after all. They are just pointing out some of the extremists/fringe groups that give Christians a bad name.  They address this at the beginning of the book and emphasis that they are not talking about ALL but only a select few.  It is the image that has been projected out in public, and how “our collective – from so-called Christians have been perceived by non-believers.  That the approaches of some is not what Christ advocated.

Does this book mean we shouldn’t be radical Christians? Well, Jesus was radical, but came to offer radical solutions not to be pushy… He offered a choice…  I think the main point is that we’re to hold each other accountable in our Christian walk and that we can’t use the same standards when we’re discussing Christians vs. non-Christians. We need to be radical enough to let God’s love shine through us and trust that God will do the changes to them, instead of falling into the trap of legalism like the Pharisees did.

In a nutshell these are the chapters:

Chapter 1: Let’s not be pharisees; Some Christians judge by behavior and not the way Jesus did, which was establishing a relationship first, than allowing our behavior changes… by doing the first we come across judgmental and intolerant.

Chapter 2: Paranoid Christians- the Christians are so afraid of being in contact with the outside world.  How are we suppose to represent Christ if we don’t engage our neighbors and non-Christian world?  “By staying tuned to God’s wavelength, Christians should be able to handle exposure to a non-Christian environment without an irrational fear of being infected by it.”

Chapter 3I’m right and your wrong – A hot political topic: you have to vote a certain way politically  if you’re a Christian… somehow you are not a Christian if you’ve voted any other way.  How to talk about these issues in a way that is acceptable.

A quote I really like from this chapter is this: “Lots of people who judge others and their behaviors end up falling into the same sin they are protesting.  Whenever you hear about the moral failure of well-known religious leaders or political figures, don’t be surprised.  But neither should you gloat.  Don’t get all self-righteous.  Don’t be driven by your pride.  Pray for them and their families.  And remember who you are.  As the Scriptures say, “Though the Lord is great, he cards for the humble, but he keeps his distance from the proud” (Psalm 138:6)… it goes on further to end the chapter by saying that if we would concentrate on loving and serving God we could make such a great impact on our country!

Chapter 4: Science is evil – science is a way to measure, and doesn’t necessarily mean evolution.  If non-Christians can’t get past Genesis, how are they suppose to believe the rest of the Bible as truth?

Chapter 5: God wants me to be rich! – God loves you , but you have to give to get.  Christianity isn’t about motives, it’s about sacrificial love.

Chapter 6: It’s the End of the world! – While we don’t know when he’s coming, we should pray like he is, but also still be aware of our world around us and take into account that we still effect today.

Chapter 7: Christian movies are lousy- we need to make great films that include redemption and love to get attention, it doesn’t always need a Bible verse to be Christian.

Chapter 8: What you do believe? Some Christians never move past their first conversion.  They figure that they’ve learnt it all .. people can’t respect us if we don’t know what we believe… we need to study and learn continually to make us more effective!

Chapter 9: truth – a controversial chapter.  All truth is God’s truth.  Letting the Spirit point out the truth regardless of who’s saying it.

Chapter 10: Giving Jesus a bad name -> This is somewhat of a summary of the book.  We may be the only Jesus people see.., so we are being judged by others…Jesus spent time getting to know people… showing them the way..  if we are condemning people for their behavior we aren’t representing Christ.

I think the authors put it quite eloquently in saying:

The basis message of our book is this: To our Christian brothers and sisters we say, “let’s learn to laugh at ourselves, and let’s learn from what we’re laughing at.” And to those outside our Christian family we say, “Much of your criticism against us is well-deserved. But don’t blame God. He agrees with you.”

While I’m not sure what to think about ALL of this book, I will say that I’m left feeling challenged and encouraged to watch my words and study the motives that I’m presenting to others!  Perhaps you’ll be inclined or challenged to use some of these answers to motivate yourself to talk with your neighbors, or even just to be aware of our hearts when we are talking to others.  I think this is a great tool if you are trying to figure out how to reach the unreached… how to be more inviting to others… how to make sure we’re on track…  And I pray that the title doesn’t scare you away!
