Simple Compassion

PhotobucketAre you looking for a different kind of devotion this year?  I received a copy of this book and thought it was quite a bit different than other devotions I’ve done.

Simple Compassion by Keri Wyatt Kent.  Keri offers a devotion that can be done weekly (a 52 week time frame).  A devotion that requires action.   You can not just sit there and let it pass you by, you need to DO to make this devotion really feel complete.  Keri offers a relevant story; some personal and some from others  for you to read.  She then provides you with questions and  ideas on how to work towards making a change in your neighbourhood.

My initial thoughts: Love the cover, love the style of this devotion.  I think this is a great book to do with a women’s group, or by yourself.  It gives you the opportunity to think about what you are reading and a chance to process it and take action.

Keri sums her book up I think best with this Bible verse:

And it is so fitting for this book.  I really enjoyed reading it through.

My favorite chapter is probably chapter 21.  It talks about God putting you -where you are right now -  for a reason.  It is your current mission field that was made just for you, by God!    This has been a struggle for me over the years, so I was really compelled and re-affirmed by this chapter.  A church I used to attend had this fantastic sign over the entrance/exit of their doors.  It read “YOU ARE NOW ENTERING THE MISSION FIELD.” That’s what I thought and felt when I read this chapter.  I forgot about my mission field… that it is here, right where I am — Exactly where God wants me to be.  I like that you are given the opportunity to move forward where you are right now and feel like God has blessed you and given you the tools to care for others — I think we too often forget this.  I know my eyes stray for the longing of foreign missions and yet here is just as important as there, and we need to remember that!

I will be going over this book again to actually do more with it.  I have to giggle.  I give Keri extra kudos for this book concept.  I think it is brilliant because I appreciate a good book that I can use for the next full year  on my reading table and get my money’s worth out of it!  And if it takes me a year to read it, I may have to attempt it the following year because I need to refresh myself with it.
